A big thanks to BigSkyKatie for the tip on where the Snowy Owls are. I have since done some research and realize this news is well known from an article in the Missoulian. But without Katie I may well have missed it. So I have to give her the credit as she gave me the directions that I needed as I only had a couple hours Sunday afternoon to run down to Polson, definitely worth the 200 mile roundtrip.

East Glacier Park, MT -- Sunrise

Taken during yesterdays (2011-12-10) full lunar eclipse. This image was captured in the Two Medicine area of Glacier National Park, MT. The wind was howling (as it almost always does on the east slope) so this image is just a tad soft.

Avalanche Creek -- 2009-08-02

I can't wait to do this hike again, one of my favorite places to go in the park. With all the snow in the park this year I am sure there will be plenty of runoff even in mid to late August. Got a late start this morning as I had out of state visitors that enjoyed this hike with me. Exif data shows 11:11am as the capture time, so it was extremely bright with a lot of shadows in the canyon. I tried to process a single image but could not do it justice to what I remember. So here is a 3-shot blended version.

I thought it was going to be a bust so I settled in for some last minute evening landscape shots. After a couple minutes of concentrating on landscape and the sky I looked over my left shoulder and to my surprise there he was a couple hundred feet away. He was not there previously. I approached very slowly getting shots as I did so, he was not terribly nervous, just curious. I was able to circle the bottom of the tree that he was in but the light was fading fast so it was a little difficult getting a shot as he was deep in shadow. Anyway this is what I could rescue of the image I liked the best.

He did not spook until these aggressive little blackbirds with red shoulders kept harassing him.

---------------------------------------------------------
Camera Info/Settings/Post Processing:
---------------------------------------------------------
Canon 7D
Canon 70-200mm 1:2.8 L IS @ 200mm
1/400 second exposure @ F2.8
Singh-Ray LB Color Combo polarizer
ISO 200
Exposure Bias: 0EV
Medium Gitzo tripod..
Adobe DNG Converter - 15 to 25% smaller files average.
RAW file processed with Lightroom 3
No HDR

Palouse Day1 Evening_01

Thanks to Aaron Reed & Zeb Andrews for a great weekend in the Palouse. This image was from the first evening up on top of Steptoe Butte in the Palouse region of Eastern Washington.
